A is for August, AI, and Annoying

Reddit post: “The underlying purpose of AI is to allow wealth to access skill while removing from the skilled the ability to access wealth.”

I think that sums it up pretty good. I’m not a luddite against technology. Hell, I drive an electric pickup truck and ride a Harley with adjustable suspension and Brembo brakes (bikers will get that one). I’m just saying don’t believe AI is on your side. If you’re in customer service and all you do is read a script, your days are numbered.

Don’t worry, It’s not just you. This past May, Disney laid off 1000 animators to replace them with AI. There was an artist laid off in a conference room with his drawings of Superheroes on the walls. I saw a podcast with Jon Stewart and Cory Doctorow explaining some corporate uses of AI. An Uber has 20 seconds to decide if they’ll take a ride. If the driver accepts a lowball offer his next offer will be lower. Also, surge pricing for us is not surge payment for them.

A few years ago, we all heard about traveling nurses making good money. They might move around the country, hospital to hospital, and they were paid well. Now their employment is controlled by four large agencies. The agencies use AI to find out how much debt a nurse has and the higher the debt the lower the pay offers. Not your skill or experience, they want to know how desperate you might be.

This is why all information on us is collected and sold.

Yes, AI is writing papers so young people aren’t learning to write - or cheating in school.

It’s being used to create “art.” I use parenthesis because it’s not art. It’s a copy of art based on looking at untold samples of actual art.

AI could never be Banksy because Banksy breaks the rules and makes his art great. I recently saw a video of my friend Robert Glasper, a brilliant jazz pianist, crying while playing. In that moment what he was playing was moving him so much he cried while playing it. The audience was mesmerized. AI will never do that.

AI is sold to us as an assistant and sold to corporate America as our replacement.

I read a story of AI replacing workers and their manager telling them to read the writing on the wall. An employee asked him, once AI has replaced all of us, who will you manage?
