Mayday Mayday
Mayday! The universal call for help. I think we could all use it. If you’re feeling a little crazy or angry or sad or even depressed, it’s not just you. Society is wearing thinking people down. I’m no expert on mental or emotional health but I don’t think anyone can survive the constant barrage of insanity we’re living in and walk away unscathed.
The latest? Well not counting finding out RFK JR, the head of Health and Human Services, cut off a roadkill raccoon’s penis out of curiosity, I would say the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was pretty wild.
Of course, that was before the Supreme Court struck down the Voting Rights Act.
See what I mean? A constant barrage.
So, the Correspondents’ Dinner, I don’t buy it. I’m not a big conspiracy theory guy but this one’s fishy at best. A guy gets past security, metal detectors, undercover cops and the secret service with a big ass gun on the night the president and his cabinet of curiosities are there. To those who don’t know, the security around a president is insane. When Reagan was president, I was still in aerospace and working at the Santa Barbara Airport where he had his ranch. When the president came in not only did we have to leave the ramp area but often had to check out of motels on his route or where the secret service was staying. You don’t get near a president.
Now we’re supposed to believe this guy ran in. Just ran past all the security. Try running through security at the airport with a gun and let me know how far you get?
My favorite part of the show was the guy who never stopped eating. Yeah, we’re under attack but hey this shrimp cocktail is pretty good.
Compound this with trump saying right after the “shooting” this is why he needs his ballroom. Yeah, Okay…
To those who don’t know, the Voting Rights Act was written because the southern states were so racist the federal government and the court said they would have to get permission to change any voting rules because they knew, given how racist the southern states were, they would change districts, rules, requirements, or anything to make it harder for Black people to vote or to ensure their votes didn’t count.
The day after this clown court struck down the act for mentioning race the same southern states changed districting, rules and requirements to make it harder for minorities to vote or that their votes wouldn’t have counted. Sixty years later and the exact same racism went into play immediately. If it weren’t real, it would be funny.
What I wanted to do before I became distracted writing about the insanity was talk a bit about mental health. The issues are real. If you feel it or feel off or whatever, it’s ok. You’re not crazy, the country is.
I deal with it. Like most comics I see a therapist at times. Right now, I’m learning a lot about my “inner critic” where it comes from and how to stop listening to it. My therapist says I should talk to it. So, you see I battle my crazy by talking to it which sounds a lot like talking to myself, which some would say is crazy but hey, it helps.
Try something physical. That helps with the mental. I’m fortunate I have a giant dog to walk and live near parks, so I get to walk regularly and even a bit of nature. I’m a city kid. He’s a city dog. We don’t need much nature.
Eric Benet who I love, and you should follow on Instagram, talks about getting your feet in the grass, sand or earth periodically to ground yourself. Eating a bit healthier and some exercise. All great. A break from media, social or otherwise also helps.
Some quiet time, music, talking to someone professional or otherwise. We’ve got to take care of ourselves people. There’s going to come a time this country will listen to sanity again. We’ve gotta save what’s left of it.
If you feel fine and happy that’s great. If you’re feeling like something is wrong just know. It’s not just you.
Oh, and laughter. Lots of laughter. We are in serious times run by absolute clowns. You have to find some humor here or you’ll explode. I’m a fan of standup myself. I’ll be doing some.
May 10 yeah, Mother’s Day I’ll be doing crowd warm up for the Kevin Hart Roast on Netflix. You won’t see me as part of it unless you’re there live. Still, I highly recommend it.
May 12-23 I’ll be part of the Cirque du Soleil show “Mad Apple” at New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/mad-apple
May 27 & 30 I’ll be doing motorcycle jokes at the Americade Rally in Lake George NY. Bikes and jokes, two of my favorite things. https://americade.com
Take a break from reality folks. We all need it.
